New Year, New Me????

Ahhhh, it's that time of year again.

While fighting through that hangover that seems to be a gift from the devil himself, you promise two things:

  1. You'll never, ever drink again

  2. It's a new year, which means a new and improved you.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not against New Year's resolutions (in fact I have some of my own).

It's not that I don't want to see people try and better themselves. That's actually exactly what I want. But I do want to stop seeing people go "Oh well, there's always next year!" literally 24 hours into the new year.

Don't make a resolution if you know you're not going stick to it. And don't try and complain about how it was just SO HARD. Don't end your rant with the conclusion that New Year's Resolution is stupid.

They're not stupid. For some of us it's the chance we see and need to start over and be better. I want people to stop making resolutions and give up without even starting. I want them to stop calling them pointless, because for some of us it's enormous motivation.

People associate New Year's resolutions with the words "impossible" and "silly". They tell us that there's no way we'll be able to stick to our goals.

Which sucks. Because for some of us these goals are very real and very important. We're already nervous, we don't need the world telling us we'll never get there.

Yes, a new year resolution may be hard. Being a better you isn't supposed to be easy, but here's the thing: if you really want something, you can make it happen.

So I guess I'm trying to say two things here:

Don't doubt the power of a New Year's resolution and don't doubt the people that make them. We already know it's not going to be easy, so show your support and don't think we're silly for trying.

Maybe try and make one yourself. All you need to do is make a plan. Set a goal then figure out what steps need to be taken. Then follow through! It probably won't be easy. It's probably going to be one heck of a climb. But here's the thing: it's a lot more rewarding to say you accomplished your goal instead of claiming you'll always have next year. (Besides, this way, the morning (or afternoon, evening; whenever you manage to wake up) of January 1st, you're only lying about one thing.)
